Enugu Government House Attacked By Pro-Biafran Group.
Members of the Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM), led by Benjamin Onwuka yesterday in Enugu claimed responsibility for the recent attack on the Enugu Government House.
The pro-Biafra group said its motive was to hoist the flag of Biafra and “reconfirm the independence of the Republic of Biafra.”
They gave an ultimatum that Nigeria “must vacate Biafra by March 31 this year and failure to do so will result in bloodbath.” They assured that the “international power, the world power we have been dealing with are coming to our rescue now and this will not be like 1967.”
This was just as the leadership of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in Enugu State demanded an unreserved apology from the police for smearing the image of the group by linking it to the attack on Enugu Government House.
“It is now clear that we were never involved,” the movement stated.
The MASSOB leaders, Ekwe Ikechukwu, Enugu West Zonal Leader, Chief Benjamin Ekwenugo, Enugu North Zonal Leader and Dan Onyebuchi Enugu East Zonal Leader told newsmen in Enugu yesterday that MASSOB is a non-violent organization and has no need for the Enugu Government House.
“What we are talking about is the republic of Biafra not a state government house.”
They also called for the immediate release of three MASSOB members in Enugu namely Asadu Nwagu Paul, Asogwa Donatus and Okpobe Clement arrested by police in connection with the attack.
The leader of the BZM, Benjamin Onwuka, who led the invasion told select newsmen in Enugu that “since January 12, 1970, the Biafra flag has never rested in Government House, Enugu which is the centre power of the Biafra people.”
Onwuka however, noted that during the invasion, his members were not armed, saying they carried only flags, sticks and ropes with which to hoist the flags which included those of Israel. “We don’t know how police came up with the story of machetes, cutlasses and charms.
“What we did on March 8 was to re-confirm the independence of the Republic of Biafra, which we successfully did. We did not attack the Government House. But we captured it for the Biafra people. We battled for four hours from 3am and by 7am, we retreated because we did not have any weapons to avoid any loss of life.
“And why we did it was to show the Biafra people that the hope of Biafra is still alive. Nothing shall quench the aspirations of the Biafra people to be independent. And that independence has resurrected. So, the Biafra flag was raised at the Government House on March 8, 2014. And I, Benjamin Igwe Onwuka, led the operation,” he said.
The BZM leader warned the police to free the four of their members in custody unconditionally. “Those boys must be freed now because what Nigeria is going to face very soon will never be forgotten by Nigerians,” he said.
They urged for for the unity of pan-Biafra organizations such as MASSOB, MEND, Bakassi Peninsular Boys, Zionism and others to enable them carry the message of deliverance.
The group, which now wants to be addressed as Biafra Zionist Federation (BZF) drew a new map of Biafra, said the national conference was unacceptable to the Biafra people
